Approaching Storm - New Mexico

Approaching Storm - New Mexico

8x8in Oil on canvas panel SOLD

Artist Note.

Mission:
Create a sense of place without detail
using simple abstract shapes, and color.

Both the previous post and this one
were self-assigned
exercises to help me explore the relationship
of warm color
in both receding and frontal space.

  1. Another gorgeous painting, Julie! Funny how I identify with the clouds, as though I've seen them...and in just that color and formation...before.

  2. I like it! Not restricting the temperature to a certain section of the picture plane really appeals to me. You've got a good distribution of cool and warm throughout-feels very natural.

I love weather systems over the horizon don't you? It's like a free show of sorts. We can see approaching storms over the Sierras (really, really far away) and other systems coming in over the wide, flat open spaces to the south and west. It's tremendous.

  3. Maybe I'm just partial to warm paintings but I love the harmony you have here and the mystery created by the lack of detail makes this fun to look at. It's moody and filled with emotion.

  5. I am looking, I really don't know how you did it except maybe the balancing greys in the sky. I do know you did it. Warm, inviting, interesting, exact right amount of texture for your intention. Hoping I can take the simplicity of my floral out to the landscape tomorrow............

  12. Julie - I can feel the storm moving in. Your colors are awesome. Love feeling like I am sitting right there. Your painting just draws me into this beautiful scene. Looking at it I can even hear the thunder in the distance. I know why this piece would be sold. Thanks so much for your lovely comments - I am so glad to have you for a wonderful friend. Hugs!

  13. Really fascinating use of color....I do tend to prefer 'warm' paintings, too....and there is just enough grayed color in the sky to make the lights really pop! Very effective!
