Rose Trio

Rose Trio
6"x8"  oil on canvas panel SOLD

Artist Note.
Its been a busy week
and a busy weekend
is already in progress.

I agreed to do a demo for the
Las Cruces Art Association
many months ago and
promptly forgot.
The reminder was delivered
by the president
a couple of days ago...
...with a big grin
at my look of horror
when he said Sunday.
Surely it cannot be so soon?

Yup, no way out
 and it has created
a panic attack.
I still get so nervous.
They have good artists
in that group.

What to paint?
Still don't have a clear idea,
but it will be a still life.

Tomorrow, Sunday, at 2 pm.
Wish me luck!

  1. These roses are so beautiful Julie! Love the depth in the petals.
Good luck with the demo. I'm sure you will have them all swooning with delight at whatever you choose to paint.

    1. Demo is over and my heart has resumed its natural rhythm. I know a couple of them really enjoyed it - but wait...they are my pals, of COURSE they liked it!
Talking about liking something - your hydrangea is wonderful - particularly with the warm and cool colors you used. All with a palette knife too. Good for you.

  3. Not to worry, you'll be a star. The roses are beautiful so you will have no problem coming up with something to wow them. Artists love watching artists paint. Go get them Julie!

    1. I am sure they enjoyed watching. You are correct...artists love watching artists paint. I know I do. I just wish it was more fun for me!
Nice landscape today on your blog, Blanche. Sorry the team lost!

  4. Is that the blue bowl from a few posts ago? :) These roses 'live' you can almost hear them whispering to each other.

Give 'em 'Birds Nests' 'ponds' or 'waterfalls'.... once you get going the paint will take over and you'll be on cruise-control. It's that first few minutes ...'whistle as you work', and then away you go! remember to show what you ended up doing

    1. another bowl but similar shape - just a bit larger. Good eye, John.
For the demo I followed a friends suggestion and painted poppies.
      Big ones!
I feel your pride in your granddaughter's book. Quite an achievement but how special was her tribute to you and your wife. Wonderful! I can see why you are so proud.

  5. Good luck! Though you are a pro and hardly need it but I know it must be nerve wracking:)

The roses are beautiful. I like being able to see the structure of that rose on the left and I like the bit of bluish green and deeper red at the bottom of the bowl. You are a fantastic colorist:)

    1. I may be experienced with a brush, but not with public events. It is my nature to be friendly, but I have never been able to walk into a crowded room and "enjoy working the room" - It would be great if I had that ability.
Thanks for the neat observations about the painting. They mean a lot.

  6. Julie - I so appreciate forgetting😄 Your style, use of color, expertise with the brush will all shine through in your presentation regardless of the subject you choose - sure wish I was in that class!

    1. Yes - fine company and nice people too. I just get so nervous and my mind goes blank. I stuck with it and didn't complete the painting but know that I took part of it as far as it could go.
I got to a point where I could not even see it clearly. But that always happens and I have to stop. I will look at it tomorrow.
Do you ever have it happen to you?

  10. Keep calm and brush on! I know you'll do a marvelous demo, Julie. Just wish someone could video it for all of us who love your work. The roses are beautiful, but I think I especially like the wonderful tones within the light rose.

Glad you like the painting. I did poppies today Much larger size so everyone could see it. Didn't finish it. Did complete enough for the audience to get the idea. Just glad it is over.
      Did you paint today?

    1. It is not the skill that I get nervous about it is that fact i get so very nervous and I cant think straight, and forget the skills. Does that make sense?
You did another beautiful female. You are so good at them. This one has a lovely glow.

  13. I do hope it went well for you yesterday! I am SURE it did. I understand the nervousness. I once took piano lessons from a beautiful teacher who had to take beta blockers for her stage fright on performance days. She was so collected in person, but once it came time to play in front of people she had block really bad. Completely forgot the notes. She said the beta blockers helped, but I wouldn't want to do it as it seems so extreme.

Your rose painting is beautiful. I love how the pinks play against the blues in the vase.

    1. thank you, Lisa.
I found the beta blocker story encouraging and thank you for sharing it. It makes sense to me because I know, I know how to paint. Why do I forget in front of people? Maybe my solution is not to do more demos except in my own studio where i can do a bit of teaching along with it.
I think you came up with a wonderful idea to paint your own interpretation of some Picasso paintings. They are great and I am looking forward to seeing more.
I am fine while I am teaching so the difference is just painting

    1. Thanks. Glad you like the roses. In India they float flower heads in water and i found I do it a lot now. I saw amazing designs with all colors, and roses once open, really lend themselves to it.
I enjoyed reading your post on painting the pastries and well as the painting you did.

Neat seeing the happy home for two of your rabbit paintings - how nice of your collector to send them. They are joyful paintings so it makes sense a nice person would buy them.
      Thanks for the visit, Susan.

  18. So very beautiful, Julie! I love that the arrangement goes beyond the edges on three sides. It really focuses the eyes on those roses! Clever the way the lines of the bowl reach up and outward accommodating the shape of the flower positions. Boy, can you do roses!

  19. Beautiful roses. Juicy. That single petal on the table is essential. And I'll bet that your demo was wonderful.

  20. Your lights take me through the painting! You do flowers so well. I hope that is what you did for your demo.
