Lemons &Tile
8x6in oil on canvas panel $140. SOLD
Artist Note.
I have this beautiful old tiled area
with a shelf and have not painted
it for a while.
Back when I painted more
realistically
I would really get into painting
all the the details so
I felt like I was actually
painting the tile itself...
but now I can suggest the pattern
with imperfect
suggestions of color and shape.
I am not sure why, but it
takes even longer somehow
than when I used to
tightly render the details.
Now, it is all about the
light and mood
I love being an impressionist!
This is just WONDERFUL! That center lemon bathed in light is a major show stopper. I'm so tempted to pull its little peel. You certainly painted your tile beautifully. I love pattern, and think it is so cool when artists use it in their paintings. It adds another aspect of interest. You even have painted "shine" marks on the tile! You think of everything!
ReplyDeleteHi Carol - thanks for such a neat comment. You make me feel more confident because you can talk the talk as well as walk the walk!.
DeleteI really enjoyed your latest post where you are being frank about your uncertainty with parts of it. I followed up and enjoyed seeing your solution so perfectly worked out.
Love all of the subtle repetition of those circular shapes! Very fun. And I like the geometry of those tiles against the more organic fruit shapes. Lots to love here:)
ReplyDeleteI don't know why abstraction of any sort takes longer but it seems to doesn't it? It's like you are trying so hard to get to this middle area between nothing and something (or something like that!).
Libby
Nice to know you like it. Thanks Libby. I have always enjoyed painting the tile with pears. The lemons are new for me.
DeleteAbstraction is in the design but I like volume too much to be too abstract.
I think it is hard to define so I REALLY liked the way you put it...the middle area between nothing and something!
The colors are wonderful in your new collage/painting... purple and green.
I was working with similar colors today but they look so different without the while paper. Nowhere near as fresh.
I found the colors so difficult to work with also. I don't gravitate towards that combo normally. Just getting the colors that I wanted with paint was a challenge. I think the white adds a lot though which makes me wonder about contrast and placement. There is so much I don't know about using color!
DeleteThis looks very soft and fuzzy!
ReplyDeleteIt is so so SPECIAL!
uh oh...not supposed to be fuzzy so thanks for the heads up, Sue. I will see if the photo is bad or the painting!!!!
DeleteLove your abstracted painting. My imagination could see a gorgeous landscape.
Dear Julie - this is truly lovely. I am so glad you are an impressionist too. Your paintings speak to the heart in such a way that sometimes realism would not. Perhaps that is the secret to growing...it is a deeper way of seeing. Whatever it is - it looks so good in your art. Have a super day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a heartwarming comment. Thank you, dear Debbie.
DeleteYou had such a beautiful post for Valentines Day. It brought back wonderful memories.
A beautiful painting, and I love the tile, the bits of color around the lemon keeps my eye moving!I love that too about your work, it gives us the perfect amount of information without over stating, it is really hard to do rather than paint in every detail.
ReplyDeleteHi Celia - thanks - we are both thinking the same thing. I read on your blog how your gull painting started with the big shapes and less detail as you worked away from the beak. Fabulous job on the eye too.
DeleteLove this Julie. So wish I could loosen up! I love this look.
ReplyDeleteHello, dear Sharon - how wonderful to see you are painting again! Your post
Deleteis remarkable in its openness and sharing. I know it will be helpful to many.
Thanks for always being so supportive of my art.
And I love that you are an Impressionist. This is a lovely little painting. It grabs your attention and holds it. Super job, Julie.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chris. Nice of you to say.
DeleteI think you are doing a wonderful job with your portraits. I really like the last one - it had rich beautiful colors..
Very beautiful composition with so nice colours !!!
ReplyDeleteThanks - I am so pleased you like the colors because you are a master of color harmony.
DeleteWhat eye candy Julie, love the composition.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it, Blanche
DeleteLove, love, love your new painting and then you say you are going to do even more...Can't wait to see it.
Beautiful! I probably takes longer now because you are expressing more of yourself rather than just capturing what is there. Whatever you've done...it works!
ReplyDeleteThat is a good way of putting it, Joan, and thank you for saying it works.
DeleteI once again am amazed at your sketching ability. To capture that scene in such detail at Starbucks PLUS the people and the table in another sketch all on one visit., AMAZING! what an inspiration you are.
love the colours :)
ReplyDeleteI think it might take longer to paint this way because subconsciously we are thinking more about what we create and where every mark has to go *shrugs*
Mine gets even more tricky with the fracturing technique. I randomly take off and then have to choose the colors to replace. I do find it totally absorbing because I respond to the surface. When I painted the old way it was more like copying what I saw.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at the new version of the shell. You were right it could be mistaken for an ear!
Everything is clear even though it is only suggested, really love the unusual subject and how you made everything come to life.
ReplyDeleteAnd YOU, dear Jane, can make a simple white hat be a star. Love your new painting.
DeleteThanks for the neat comment.
Excellent work Julie.....love the lemon peel...the tile is wonderful....as well as the glow on the lemons!!!!
ReplyDeleteHow nice - thanks Hilda I have missed your posts and I sure hope you are recovering after your op and back feeling better than ever.
DeleteHi Julie! Definitely more enjoyable, to my taste! Impressionnism leaves an open door to the imagination!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that - thanks. You worded it so well. An open door to the imagination.
DeleteI am going to write it down and keep it by my easel.
I just saw your wonderful Friendship Valentine painting - great concept!
I am going to keep it in mind.
Would love to paint one myself if you give me the okay.
Wonderful rendering of the tile and love, love the light on the lemon. Two backup players and one standout!
ReplyDeleteHu Helen - always a warm feeling when I read your comments. You have a great way of noticing things.
DeleteLooking forward to seeing your next painting. Another barn?
