Mums, Picasso & Cherries

Mums, Picasso & Cherries.
8"x6"  oil on linen panel  SOLD

Artist Note.
 The cherries are still
inspiring me, so I went into a
different color palette
and am happy I did.
I find the color harmony
in this one very appealing.

This is an extra personal painting
because I used
an old and much loved
Picasso top
as the background.
The challenge of this was
how to do a "busy" painting
but still manage to
keep a focal area.

It was fun to paint.

    1. Happy to know you liked the background. It was the most difficult part of the painting. I really enjoyed seeing how well you did a difficult subject. How many sides did that pot have? Amazing how you did it
We are both working in cool colors!

  3. The background is lovely. I like your idea of using patterned fabric for the backdrop. Even with all the business those flowers get your attention. Great job!

    1. I enjoy using textiles, Joan, and many a blouse has been used in a painting either for the color or design.
You have really managed to get to visit some beautiful places with your group. I love the garden one especially.

  6. Maintaining the focal point in a "busy" painting is something you are especially good at, Julie. I often marvel at your ability to create depth of field and three-dimensional forms in the midst of a complex composition. Your paintings are so rich and textured, but they never lack delineation. This is another example of your skill. It's lovely.

    1. So encouraging - thanks for the great comment.
I really liked this piece but it wasn't easy. Good to get into new colors with the cherries.
Thanks for being such a great supporter.

  7. You pulled it off beautifully, Julie! The colors are so compatible with the red cherries complementing the greens and the analogous shades of blues-greens and yellow-greens. I also love the design on the vase which echos the upward direction of the petals on the mums. A really exquisite work!

    1. I love the way you can break down color harmonies, Carol. Thanks for noticing it works.
The vase is what started the color change. Found it at the Salvation Army Thrift Store. I have painted it a couple of other times since.
      What are you working on?

  11. I can see the challenge! From my end, I think the mums and the "solidity" of those cherries help to "ground" everything if you will and simplify things-clarify them I guess. The "exactness" of the vase pattern helps too I think. Lots of quote marks!

Hope your week is off to a good start.

  13. You did pull it off so well...the colors are gorgeous...the white flowers give you a feeling of movement too. Beautiful as always friend. Hope you are having a wonderful first day of summer! It is hot here but I am sure not as hot as it is in your part of the world. Hugs!
