Jessica Seated

Jessica
12x9  oil on canvas
study - life class

I usually jump at the chance to paint from
a model...especially a clothed one.
Jessica had a nice roundness to her body which I liked.
She fell asleep so was perfectly still.

Artist Note.

I started off finding the shape and proportions in a
transparent red. I had pre-mixed a batch of clothing
and background colors while waiting for the right pose
to be found. I painted fast and
scooped up the paint for texture. The red showed through
in places and I liked the look so
came back and outlined with red here and there.
Not my usual way to paint, but enjoyable and that's what
it should be all about. Trying new ways and
treasuring the moment.  Right?

  2. I have been following your blog for a short while now. Your work is amazing and I love how you share the artist insights with each post. I love reading them and look forward to your posts. Love this painting. She looks really cozy in that chair and the red outline complements very well with the colors on her clothes.

  3. Julie - You paint people as beautiful as you do your florals and still lifes. Pretty neat that the model would fall asleep...love the red in the window that you used for the background. This is so lovely. I am always amazed at your talent. Hope you have a wonderful day.

  11. Those pops of red give a very nice structure to the piece.

She fell asleep with a bunch of people watching her? Goodness! Not my personality at all:)

  15. (another) Wow! What a cohesive work- strength in it's simplicity...and i really LOVE the lush & lively brushwork (that you described as 'scooping' up the paint- I can envision that now). And yes, that transparent red really sets things off so well! I'm so glad you share your thoughts as well as the painting- I ALWAYS find it inspiring!

  20. Bonjour chère amie,

Ces petites notes de rouge qui demeurent parcimonieusement apportent une belle touche dans cette peinture remplie de sérénité.

    ♡ Gros bisous ♡

  21. This is truly charming, Julie. I especially like the size of the figure for the canvas and her arm part way beyond the edge. The focus is wholly on her. Lovely color combination and a wonderful mood created, as Jane suggested.

  24. I don't ever recall you painting the figure. You should do more. This is excellent. The colors are rich and the paint luscious. Clothed models are for painting.

The window and the chair are symbols of a unique tenderness. This painting makes dream the viewer.
