Market Day.

Market Day
6x6in oil on gallery wrap canvas  Gifted

Artist Note

I never seem to tire of doing the market paintings.

I am fortunate that the
Las Cruces Farmers Market
happens twice a week...
and it is right outside the building
my studio is in.

In the cold weather - yes, we do get cold weather,
especially early in the mornings - I use a camera
and then pick the elements I like to
sketch a few compositions in my sketch book.
By the time I do that the painting is well and truly
in my head.

This is a gift for a friend.

  2. Love your ability to take a large scene like this with many details and put it all on a 6" X 6" surface. Great shadows, delightful color and lovely light.

    1. That is a lovely thing to say, Carol, Thank you.
I admired your post of not being paid and going public with it. It really is a gift to other artists to keep them informed.

  4. As others have commented, I am also continually impressed by your ability to capture such a busy scene on a relatively small scale. You manage to artfully compose many details and retain both depth and focus. I feel sure my efforts would merely result in a jumble, but as always your skill is apparent! Delightful painting and lucky friend!

    1. It took a while to learn to do it. I was the single item gal for quite a while!
I went into the daily painting, working on small panels, and soon found out I could do a 16x20 in less time. I wouldn't want to do
all the time so I do paint plenty of other sizes.
Thanks once again for visiting. I always love your comments.

  6. I love markets too. Your whites and lights really help your eye travel from the lady in the center to the hat and shoulder of the woman in the blue shirt. Just lovely!!!

    1. Thank you, Joan. I didn't link the whites deliberately. Nice observation.
It appears you are getting a lot of snow this winter. The stone building looks great. '

  7. Always love your farmer's market paintings and as many have pointed out, it is amazing how you put so much in such a little space without it looking too much , and such great depth too !

    1. I enjoy figuring out the complexity market scenes bring. I have to eliminate so much but still keep the integrity of the grouping.
Thank you, Susan for such a neat comment.
Your Eyes Wide Closed painting caught me napping!
      Love it!

  10. Julie what a gorgeous painting...the richness of the colors is eye candy. You have captured the feeling of sunlight as well as the shade under the shop's veranda - it makes me think I am right there in the same sunny spot looking in. So beautiful. Hugs!
