Artist Note

A small plein air painting.

We are focusing on color and values

in class this month so I wanted to 

jog my memory a bit on the difference

between painting from a photo

and getting out and seeing it.

Shadows are MUCH lighter
and transparent outdoors 

but look darker on a photo.

Verticals are always darker than horizontals

(The same color will be darker as a vertical

when light source is above)

...and the distant, horizontal ground

is the lightest area after the light on the clouds.

We all see color differently and I like to
punch up the actual colors I see
so below is the plein air painting
and you can see how it started
with a strong light dark pattern
of neutral colors...

I know some of you will prefer it
one way over the other
and that is why it is important to paint
what YOU like best for yourself.

I love a bit of color

This is my first painting

with my new pupils!

Notice it is larger than my usual 6x8.

I am having a bit of trouble 

with the small size. 

Out of practice!

This is not my first painting

since cataract surgery

by any means,

 but it is my first completed one.

 My depth perception is

slightly askew.

 and I am having

to learn color without a 

seeing a green haze

Meaning lots of tossers! 

The only way to stop me

from painting over and over

on the same canvas, 

(trying to get it right,)

has been to razor it!

Bet you are saying...

been there, done that!

Anyway, I am very excited.

with my new vision

and 

look forward 

to the joys of painting

once more.

This went thru several incarnations,

starting off with a silver bowl.

It became a fight of reflections!

I know when I am beaten 

so I went and got a white bowl

off the shelf.

This is another painting

 from the big box of cherries

we bought at Nichols Ranch

Situated a beautiful 80 min drive 

from Las Cruces,

the orchards are 

at an altitude of 6,800ft

- much cooler than here!

Leaving, we stopped to admire 

this view

of the brilliant streak of light

below the distant mountains 

created by

 White Sands National Monument.
