Pushing Color in the Landscape

Pushing Color - The Landscape

8x6in oil on canvas panel   $125.

My mission was to take the color into the magic hour.
That is when the sun starts to impart a golden glow
on the landscape.

Artist Note.

The golden glow time of the day can be magic.
It starts a full hour or so before sunset. The sun is still high enough
to have impact shadows. As it gets closer to sunset, the shadows
are longer, but more mellow without a high contrast to punch them up..
I took the colors I saw and pushed the contrast of warm and cool.
This is a spot I have painted many times and now I can just
drive to it and sit and take notes as I watch the colors change.

    1. Thanks so much, Helen.
Glad you are understanding the warm and cool principle. I personally, find warm and cool contrasts to be one of the things I am attracted to in all types of art.

  2. I love the way the trees capture the suns rays, rather than a red sky! They tell us all about where the sun is and what it's doing.

I also love dawn's light and the misty dew of Autumn (the Fall) in England.

    Wonderful picture, Julie; thank you.

  3. Dear Julie, the magic hour must be spectacular in the places where you live!
The richness of warm and cool colors that vibrate together, applied with your magic hand, shining in the landscape and make the viewer happy!

    1. It is spectacular, Rita, but I have found in my travels, and there have been many, that the magic hour is beautiful everywhere.
      Your work is truly beautiful!

  4. Love the warm glow you have in this painting. Do you use a palette knife or have you built up layers with brush?

    1. Hi and thanks, Ann - I use both a painting knife and a brush. I like a bit of texture in my paintings.
Those lovely photos you have posted bring back a lot of memories for me.

  5. Another stunner, Julie. I am trying to figure out why I am reminded of Van Gogh...may simply be the beautiful trees. You have indeed captured the magical light time of day.

    1. Well, that is a nice complement to be reminded of Van Gogh. I think it could be the combination of texture and tall thin-ish trees. His were cypress I believe but not sure. it has been a while. I do know I like his work a lot.

    1. Thank you, Carol.
I loved your honesty about sailing. My sister and her husband are avid sailors and last time they came over from England we rented a large boat out of Newport Beach so we could sail around Catalina. My poor hubby was so sea sick. My vertigo got out of hand and I became the galley person because I could only go on deck when we were anchored. They have not been back since!!!!
