Farmers market #11

Farmers Market
Garlic - 4 x $1.
6x8in oil on canvas panel  $125.  SOLD

Boxes of locally grown garlic create a pattern of cream
and hints of purple. Love the sign!

Artist Note.
Don't ask me why I found this compelling to paint.
Who can explain the inner urge - that response of excitement
when viewing something which might appear ordinary to others?
I love color - certainly not much here.
I love pattern - very repetitive sameness here.
So I am questioning that strong response and am going to explore
more of this today.

    1. I loved the purple in the garlic. I only ever seem to find the white ones at the store. Some were even dark purple. I am trying to get it right in a watercolor version.

  4. Well, this is right up my alley. The abstract feel, the repetition, the monochrome colors and how a simple calm area with straight black lines, forming numbers, really make things pop. Loving it.

    1. Glad you like it Roger. Very monotone for me - I agree. I do like it though. Your nests today have such a lovely orange line. really adds a lot of impact.

  6. Every day I see a shop (L'orto di Franca) that near the door, shows "braids" of onions and garlic ... and every time I think I should photograph and painting them ... what special colors have these vegetables!
So I completely understand your motivations and then ... how can you resist "4x1"?
Fabulous garlic waiting to go into the kitchen to prepare so many good things ... and now it is immortalized by your beautiful art!

  14. I like the sign too and it really add to the charm of the whole piece. Painting garlic would be my undoing...but you did it with that special touch that only you can do. Those touches of green and purple are so wonderful. I really like this painting Julie.

  15. Love the muted colors in this and how many of the garlic heads are just suggested but come across as though they're all spelled out. I also question and wonder why we're drawn to certain subjects, especially those that didn't seem to captivate us in the past.

  16. You got those creamy whites and violets down perfectly. And the little sign is just right.

  17. Brilliant subject. Expert values. How very brave you are to tackle the challenge.

  18. Julie - you can take something ordinary and boring and make it so lovely and interesting. I think it is your artist eye that drew you to these garlic bulbs and then your vision in making them look wonderful. Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a great day.

  19. Julie, You have certainly taken advantage of a trip to the farmer's market. That in it's self is a fine lesson in finding subjects everywhere. I can hardly wait to see how your focus on the rather plain garlic will result.

Thank you so much for your encouragement on my abstract journey. There are days when I am full of doubts. Your enthusium for my adventure helps me to stay the course!
