English Wild Rose
English Wild Rose
8x9in watercolor on Strathmore NFS
Artist Note.
I painted this a few years ago while sailing on the
English Norfolk Broads with my sister and her
husband. Both avid sailors and owners of a handsome
yacht called, The Gallant.
I have vertigo and my safe viewpoint was
happily in the galley where I painted this little rose after
plucking it off a hedgerow on one of our daily
"moor and then walk to a pub for a meal."
It brings back very special memories so I got it
out and added some more characteristic, Julie brushwork.

I don't know how much you changed it, but I like it, especially the depth and feeling that the bowl is mostly in the shadow and is hit just slightly with a spot of light, very lovely.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful painting - beautiful memory!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice painting. I am glad it brings back fond memories for you. Those are the paintings to always keep around......
ReplyDeletefunny when I was sailing I had to stay outside on the upper deck..I got seasick in the galley! This is a wonderful painting. The flower is so delicate!
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous, Julie. I've just not seen a piece of your work that I haven't loved. The day sailing sounds like just the life I'd love to live!
ReplyDeleteI like the part about walking on the moors and going to the pub! LOL:)
ReplyDeleteThe flower is lovely and when you look close up, the construction is really pretty. The leaves especially look very graceful.
I like your ability to control the light for just the right impact, Julie!
ReplyDeleteI love your visible brush work in your watercolors!!!!! Isn't it wonderful when paintings bring back wonderful memories? One of the things that drives me to paint.
ReplyDeleteYes, this certainly looks like the new Julie. It is an excellent combination of what we loved about your art before along with what we love now.
ReplyDeleteOMG one of the most beautiful paintings I've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteJulie - this is is so pretty. Love roses that grow by the sea. It is as if they almost grow wild there. Hope you are doing better my friend. Take care and have a great week.
ReplyDeleteAs usual you hit the mark! Great painting, so much depth and gorgeous light.
ReplyDeleteI don't know Norfolk very well, but you obviously enjoyed it.
BEAUTIFULLLY painted, Julie!! Julie brushwork is amazing!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful little painting. Originally painted in the galley? Hard to imagine.
ReplyDeleteYour colors on this are really lovely. I can't imagine being indoors on a boat and being able to do work like this. Bravo to you!
ReplyDeleteDelicate and delightful! Reminds me of the beautiful Dogwood we had in the yard when I was growing up. I must say your method of fracturing certainly adds so much interest and "texture" to a painting.
ReplyDeleteI love your brushwork, very decisive as are the colors. Incredible that you painted this while on a boat.
ReplyDeleteA watercolor that looks like it might be an oil! Remarkable!
ReplyDeleteStunner!! Love this one-just strong and beautiful!
