Pike Place Market - T-Shirt!
8x6in oil on canvas panel $135. SOLD
Artist Note.
Continuing to explore with paint my
Pike Place Market experience.
This was fun to paint...
but difficult with the many
shapes and colors. T-shirts were
hanging all over the back
and staggered in different piles
on the counter - and not color
co-ordinated at all.
I had to decide
hanging all over the back
and staggered in different piles
on the counter - and not color
co-ordinated at all.
I had to decide
on a focal area, and make
everything subordinate to it.
It is too easy to paint everything
with every little detail when painting
from a photo like I did here,
but I wanted to capture how I
responded to the colors
and artificial lighting because
they were what had excited me.
Every time I got too precise I
closed my eyes and took myself back
and remembered the atmosphere...
then scraped off and redid.
Above, I show the vendor folding up a
shirt and he had the brown bag
already opened to place it in.
Efficient!

This is one I really liked.
I LOVE the vibrant colors and the lighting throughout this!!! Well done, Julie! The quote at the end made me smile. My niece who attends Smith has it as a tattoo on her back.
ReplyDeleteLOL - a tattoo no less. She is off to a grand start proving it.
DeleteYou have a real talent for sketching, Joan. I love the latest one.
Excellent job on coordinating the un-coordinated (try that three times!) with design and color. It's really fun seeing something you know so well painted by the lovely Julie.
ReplyDeleteIts always a pleasure to read your comments, Blanche. Thank YOU! Lucky you living near enough to go to Pikes market whenever you want..
DeleteAn exciting painting full of life. Not sure I would have seen the potential in that scene, but glad that you did.
ReplyDeleteHi John...I understand what you mean...he is not exactly a pin-up is he. The whole ambiance was amazing though.
DeleteHope the workshop is progressing on schedule.
A perfect balance here with the shape, color, design and all. Very eye catching!
ReplyDeleteYou have it going on girl!
Hi Carol - thanks for the neat comment.
DeleteI return the complement quite truthfully because the changes you made to your painting made a big difference...especially placing the two leaves in front.
Julie - this is full of life and color. Such a difficult subject too but you captured it so well. The quote on that green shirt made me smile. Thank you friend. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie - loved all your flower photos. How beautiful. The flowers at the Pike Street market were stunning and I am still sorting out how best to paint them. Have a lovely weekend, my friend.
DeleteSuch a hard subject to tackle...nice to see a familiar subject since I live in the area.
ReplyDeleteLucky you, Susan. I enjoyed visiting your blog, but had a hard time getting there because you do not link from your blogger. I love the way you crop to get unusual viewpoints.
DeleteIt's awesome Julie.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol. I was pleased, but I struggled. Wish painting would flow out easily.
DeleteI love your new watercolor...especially the way you painted the slicker.
Wonderful abstract quality with a great center of interest. So much fun Julie. Vacation over on Saturday and then back to the studio! Yeah!
ReplyDeleteSo good to hear from you, Helen. Hope you have enjoyed your vacation.
DeleteGlad you like this one. Thanks.
I'm so happy you're back :) I'm loving this series!
ReplyDeleteYou are great - thanks Leesa.
DeleteCongratulations on the Peoples Choice Award
Super work Julie. Just got back to figure work myself yesterday. You are inspiring x
ReplyDeleteI find that figure work is tricky when you want to focus on more than just the figure. I hope after a run on the market series I will be more comfortable.
DeleteHope your event went well - I love the paintins you did for the show and the one with all the glass pieces was especially stunning.
Great painting and I hope you bought the shirt! LoL I love it!
ReplyDeleteHi Sherry - love that pic of you with Jeff. Cool is most likely the right word.
DeleteLeather jacket and all! Got the shirt, yes!
I have heard so much about that market and your painting here and in the last post capture exactly what I imagined and have seen in photos. I really want to go some day.
ReplyDeleteGreat t-shirt...going to have to remember those words!
Hi dear friend - Great to see your lovely new painting with the pink slippers.
DeleteYou would love the market so put it on your bucket list.
So pleased you had a wonderful trip.
That riot of color! You are the master at pulling everything together. This is so creative - so unique. Love this series, Julie!! (Love the t-shirt too.)
ReplyDeleteColor - yes! Thanks for such a neat comment, Chris.
DeleteYou know how much I like your work and your new portrait is another winner.
great quote too!
Excellent designing Julie!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you Padmaja. Your story on the new post added so much to the beauty of the painting.
DeleteI really love this moment and it does not feel busy but a beautiful impression of a busy person. Funny t-shirt!
ReplyDeleteThanks Celia. It is nice to hear it is not too busy. Touch and go for a while.
DeleteYour watercolors of the ocean waves are beautiful and really capture the movement.
I enjoyed seeing your daughters work too. Excellent . She does great shading.
A nice addition to this colorful series. You do pull a complex composition together skillfully.
ReplyDeleteI agree - complex, but more so because of the size of the canvas.
DeleteYour painting of Ellis is really off to a great start, and
as usual, you raised an interesting question about influences in art. Great post!
This is wonderful! Love!
ReplyDeleteHi Bruce, Thanks. I really LOVED watching the video on your blog - plus a give-a-way too. You ROCK!
DeleteJulie, I love the riot of colour yet there is evidence of organisation much like the methodical way in which he evidently conducts his business. It takes great skill to capture all of that in one image yet you have. Brilliant! I love it!
ReplyDeleteSharon
You are very generous and I treasure your comment. Thank you.
DeleteYour work is awesome and I enjoyed seeing the Seago copy process and your new bottle - a wonder done in 10 mins.
One surely picks up on the noise and activity of a factory floor in this painting, Julie! Great description of your thinking strategies and working process in this post. What a great place to visit!!
ReplyDeleteIt definitely was a wonderful visual experience.
DeleteDid you ever risk "fixing" that beautiful cherry painting?
Love the tee shirt slogan.... :)
ReplyDeleteAnd the painting is fantastic! I so admire how you convey the essence of the place and time the way that you do!
