The Other Yellow Roses

Yellow Roses #2
8x6" oil on canvas  $140 SOLD

Artist Note.
This is the second painting
I did from the gift of
yellow roses
I received last month.
The first one was a
square close-up
and on this one
I made  an angle
to divide the
flowers and leaves.
The bud breaks it up
so it isn't too abrupt.

Hope all mothers
 enjoyed their special day.
I enjoyed calls
from my kids and as
my own beloved mother
has been gone for
quite a while,
 I wore a blouse
and a locket of  hers
that I treasure,
and remembered
happy times.
It was lovely!

    1. Hi Libby - I feel lucky to have enjoyed a great friendship with my mother. I do not seem to miss her as I commune with her some part of most days. I really missed her when I was young and came to this country, but she followed later on and that is when I truly settled down and we enjoyed becoming US citizens together.
I have thought a lot abut the "less is more" approach you write about on your blog. Editing. it is important and I thank you for the reminder.

  3. Very beautiful Julie. I recently purchased your Fracturing Technique video and enjoyed it very much. I will have to try it for myself soon. It has inspired me to try using the Alkyd oils again.

Thank you for enjoying my video. Let me know if you have any questions. remember - you can fracture a little or a lot depending on subject matter.

  4. This is delightful, as your paintings always are, but I especially admire the depth of field you've conveyed. Also, I really like how you manage to make your backgrounds so interesting, yet they never overwhelm. It's a tricky balance, but you've certainly mastered it.
Your Mother's Day sounded as if it couldn't have been better, and how lovely to incorporate memories of your mum as you did.

    1. I always get a boost after reading your comments. Thank you SO much Helene.
The fracturing technique sure helped me with my backgrounds. They used to be uninteresting and not cohesive with the quality of the other paint. in fact I over-blended them.
Hope you are painting on a new piece. Looking forward to seeing it.

  5. Dear Julie those beautiful roses just seem to be growing right off the canvas. Love the lovely complimentary background of lavender. Read your comment to me from last post. Your mother must have been a very special lady. Imagine at seventy becoming such a talented artist. Sure that yesterday held so many wonderful memories. Hope you have a great day dear friend. Hugs!

    1. I enjoyed your new Mothers Day post and what Linda wrote about having no children but her pets and that counted. I agree whole heartedly. Nurturing is a wonderful gift we pass on to everyone and everything in our lives. My daughter has no children, but works with special need children and she loves and nurtures them along with the cats, dogs, turtles, fish...get the picture!
Hope your mother is well and enjoyed her special day too.

    1. Yes - I remember it is on a different date over there as my sister usually shares her Mother's Days events.
I really enjoyed the variety of posts on your blog and the Irish song was a hoot!
Keep those wonderful daily sketches going.

  8. I love the upturned petals on your roses - like little cups - to catch the light. Your bud works effectively to break the diagonal emphasis of the greenery. Just perfection!! The varied greens work together very well.

Hope you are having a creative week, Carol. Maybe doing another fabulous bird - fingers crossed!

  9. How funny. I wore a blouse of my mom's earlier in the week and I always have a ring of hers on. These are lovely. Wouldn't have noticed how you broke it up with the bud, but onc you said it, I went and looked again and it does exactly what you said it did. Thanks for being such a great teacher.

    1. Good to hear from you Kathleen. I enjoyed seeing your plate of pears for the still life show in Albuquerque. Wish I lived closer. I love still life and a whole show of them would be fascinating to be able to see the different artistic visions.

  11. These yellow flowers are so beautifully painted Julie!!! It was very emotional that you wore your Moms blouse and locket for Mothers Day! I remember when my Dad asked me to give away my Moms clothes after she passed away and till now I regret not making a quilt from the precious material so I can wrap it around me when I need her close!

    1. I am happy you like the painting, Hilda, but even happier hearing we share the same emotional ties to our mothers. Love the idea of a quilt. I will pass that on to my daughter to keep at the back of her mind.

Also very special is the fund raiser you did the painting of the little girl jumping off the dock., It gave me a lovely warm glow reading about it all.
