The Rio Chama, Abiquiu, N.M.

The Rio Chama, Abiquiu, N.M.
6”x8”  oil on canvas panel. $150. SOLD

Artist Note
One of the most gorgeous spots
I have ever painted.
Over the years I have captured it
in all seasons but the monsoon season
with cloudy skies casting random shadows
has to be my favorite.

There is a particular time when
the sun cuts through a gap and
shines across the river.
It is magical.

Photographing this painting was
rather difficult due to the blue of the
mountains appearing far
bluer than on the paintings.
It took forever to get it close.
seriously...
I could have painted another painting!

Anyone know a solution to this problem?

Fall Colors Along the River

Fall Colors Along the River

6x8in  oil on canvas board   $125.

The colors can seem unbelievable at this time of year.
We are not quite at this stage of color here in Las Cruces, but up in
the northern part of New Mexico
the aspens and cottonwoods glow with brilliant oranges
and many shades of yellow and rust.

Artist Note:

This was a demo of neutralizing the fall colors, but still keeping the colors bright.
Every color has some "yellow green" or "reddish purple" in it.  Yes - even the blue.

Chama River, Abiquiu, NM.

Chama River. Plein Air.
6x8 oil on canvas 100.

Today was the first morning painting in the Santa Fe area. We drove to my favorite spot about an hour north of our casita... between Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. The light was changing so swiftly that I changed from my brush and worked with a palette knife. The amazing reds of the earth caught the morning light and appeared to be almost florescent. I had to knock the intensity down quite a bit. Anyone who has been here understands how vibrant the colors actually are.
Tomorrow we are painting people. Should be fun.
