It is wonderful when the roses bloom

for the first time in a new year.

My home has an abundance 

of these beautiful roses growing

along a fence.

I have so many containers to choose from
so I decided on a color harmony first,
where the roses would be the secondary color
and pop out a bit more.

Here you can see I used a warm light bulb

but I changed it to a cool light

and liked it better. 

Maybe due to all the blues 

and greens I had. The blues 

in the warm light can take over.

It made the warm color of the roses way too hot

competing with the aqua glaze of the pot.

I had to remember 

the roses had the starring role.

Although I gave up teaching workshops

I still teach regular weekly art classes 

at the Artist Guild, here in Las Cruces.

This is a group hard at work.

I couldn't show all of them

from this angle but you can get the drift.

They love painting so much

that some drive

for over an hour, one way, to come

 Not only that, this group brings 

amazing munchies!

Every group has a different energy

I love teaching.

I am blessed.

After saying that...

I know they

they will look at this with

a critical eye regarding this month's focus.

So this is for them.

Every quarter is different

as are the outer edges.

I just enjoyed a wonderful 

few hours in the studio.

I gathered a favorite porcelain vase

to go with some beautiful flowers

I was given over Christmas plus

a table runner that was my mothers,

and blissfully went into 

a zen zone.

Christmas was very, very special 

as I hope yours was too.

This will be the last post of the year.

A sight not often seen

here in early November.

This was during the two days 

of rain we got. 

This view of the chili fields

looks totally different 

than in the full sun. 

Far more muted.

Red chili is harvested 

later than the green chili. 

Left on the vine to turn red,

 it is picked and spread on

roofs and similar surfaces

to dry in the sun -

the traditional way.

I LOVE chili

green or red.

This may conclude my water series.

Notice the "may."

Last weekend I was in 

Cloudcroft, NM.

Think of the name...

Cloud... croft. Land in the clouds!

I was lucky enough to enjoy

a misty morning and it was 

truly atmospheric and beautiful. 

So different from fierce colors 

and beauty the dry air creates

here in Las Cruces.

The Lodge Resort has a 

 large lily pond and I was able

to take many photos.

The colors were cool and muted 

with very soft edges.

(The Lodge also has a ghost - can you 

imagine her coming out of the mist!!)

The DPW Challenge has

The FOG Challenge this week

so hoping that the mist will substitute

because fat chance of me seeing 

fog in this neck of the woods.

I checked - there IS a 

difference between mist and fog 

even though they are both 

created with water droplets.

No - not a rose this time, 

but they are very much like a 

cabbage rose to paint.

A friend was up in Albuquerque

where they grow and brought me 

this one. It was wilting after the drive

 so I had to paint it fast.

New Mexico Vista

New Mexico Vista

I have painted this magnificent vista several times.
It is northwest of Albuquerque on the way to Santa Fe.
I am looking past the hills of pinion bushes, down onto the
green ribbon of trees which follow the banks of the Rio Grande.
Behind the mesas are the Jemez mountains.  A volcanic group
which holds Las Alamos National Laboratory , Bandelier
National Monument, two pueblos, hot springs and countless
hiking and climbing opportunities. During late summer, the
clouds gather and the New Mexico skies grab my heart
with their beauty.
