Feather Series - Chicken

Chicken Feathers

6x6in oil on canvas panel NFS

I am very fortunate to be a member of our
artists guild. Another member came in on
Friday with a bag of feathers for me. She
owns four chickens and the brown one
(called Bunny) is molting at the moment.
Thank you so much Phyllis Davis.
I loved painting these.

Artist Note.

The previous  dove and parrot
feathers had a certain weight and form
to them. By comparison, these chicken
feathers were almost weightless.
Soft, curved, speckled with fluffy ends near
the quill. My goal was to capture the feeling
of how light these feathers were.
That - and how to make a painting out of them.

  3. They are beautifully painted, Julie. I especially love how you captured the fluffy wispy feathers at the bases of the quills. I find myself mesmerized by the colors in the background and pulling out those blues.

  4. It's so much fun to see how you capture the 'personality' of each feather! Who knew they had so much variety especially when you leave out the fussy details? It's a delight to watch this series unfold.

  5. I think it's the curve of the feathers, the placement, and those little wispy edges. You did a nice job on these:)

  6. You've definitely succeeded on both your goals, Julie!
Love that light breaking through the middle!
Great lost and found edges......on and on! :)

  8. This is charming and so well executed. The feathers do look so light that if a little breeze came up they would blow away! The large patch of light and the dark shadows captivate me. It all just makes me smile.

  13. You certainly did make them appear light and weightless, but colorful and substantial too. What a lovely painting!

  14. These feathers are fun. You got how light they are and also the beautiful highlights in them. I enter the painting down by the dark area close to your name and then I just wander. It seems right. So, in my humble opinion, you are right on track!

  17. Julie - beautiful as always. Feathers are something I love to gather...have them everywhere in vases and treasured places. I can see why you wouldn't want to part with this painting as well as your previous one. Both are lovely my friend.

  18. Julie, i've been impressed - everytime. All your works, especially these feathers, looks so authentic. It's great how reallistic you convey the structure and the colours of the feathers. And your brushstrokes look so easy / light
