The Raven’s Nest

The Raven’s Nest
8”x10” cradled panel  $225.
Purchase HERE
A floater frame is available for this piece.

Artist Note
This one is an experiment in
mark making. I enjoyed the freedom
of just feeling the paint,
moving it around and not
trying for anything other
than the pleasure of discovery

The summer is almost over
and classes
begin next week.
I am looking forward to seeing
all the artists back in their
happy place of doing something
just for themselves.

  1. Hi, Julie - I really love your ravens - both the white one and this black beauty. These birds have such personality that I never get tired of watching them (although I have never seen a white raven). We actually had a beautiful American Kestrel perched on our fence post a few weeks ago. So magnificent.

    1. OMG...A Kestrel? Lucky lucky YOU! They have the most beautiful marks and colors. I have never seen a white raven except on the videos. They captured my interest more than the black ones. Have you seen the youtube of a raven snowboarding down a roof on a lid? Fabulous.
Your new painting is a neat portrait and painted so well.
your info about the ready cut frame moulding is very handy.

  2. It is a sobering thought, Julie, that summer is almost over, but I think we still have a few weeks left to enjoy.

  4. I know, it's August ALREADY!!! At least you're getting back to your happy place, too, and will hopefully also be painting "just for yourself" along with your class! I am so enjoying all these ravens, Julie, and especially like the composition of this piece.

    1. Thanks Helene, yes, my happy place is important. I do plan on painting for myself in-between the classes.
Your painting "In The Moment" really captures the feeling of summer sun on the water. It has the WOW factor.

  5. Thank you for your kind comments over on my 'boat-blog', Julie. I had no idea that I would be away from art (and blogging) for so long - now over a year! My wife, Patsy, has been very ill compounded by problems during the operation when her heart valves etc were being replaced. Nothing was more important than looking after her and so the time fell away. She's improving but it will take a bit of time yet. Nevertheless, we are having fun and going away to celebrate our 60th wedding Anniversary next month (Diamonds are forever). Lots of love, Dear Girl xx

    1. Oh, John, it is amazing how life has it twists and turns. The strong emerge and it appears good old Patsy is from the same stock as you! I remember when you had a go at it too.
I am so pleased to hear that all is on the mend and you are anticipating a trip to celebrate... 60 years together. YIKES! Naturally you both married each other at 10. Many many congratulations to you both and have a marvelous time.

  6. These Ravens are beautiful Julie. I love all the colors you put in them.they almost look iridescent. and the background!!! Off the charts beautiful. I'm really sad that Summer is almost over.. I do love the change of color in the Fall.... however, the older I get, I need warmth!! lol and it gets SO cold in New York...

  7. Oh! I love this! I am fascinated with the mark-making. You know I think it adds to the composition itself. Whenever there are lines or "sets" of lines my eyes follow them. They certainly act as "eye guides" to an object or to an interesting portion of the painting. They also add a rhythm to the painting as a whole. I can think of lots of objects I can find in my kitchen for making these marks!!

    1. Thanks for this wonderful comment Carol. It has been fascinating finding what works and what doesn't and many many - how did I just do that - moments. Don't know how much will stick. Classes start tomorrow and that hampers my creative time.
