This one is an experiment in

mark making. I enjoyed the freedom

of just feeling the paint, 

moving it around and not 

trying for anything other 

than the pleasure of discovery. 

The summer is almost over 

and classes 

begin next week. 

I am looking forward to seeing 

all the artists back in their 

happy place of doing something 

just for themselves.

It's the Blue Sky 

Gold and Scarlet leaf time.

  I always try to paint an aspen

or cottonwood

every year.

 I did two this year -

experimenting with the different light 

on the same group of trees.

I am quite sad really 

because it reminds 

me that the clocks go back

and I drive home

 from work in the dark!

Does anyone else dislike that?

Mesilla is an historical town next to 

Las Cruces, where I live in New Mexico

It has kept its wonderful Spanish/Indian roots.

Situated in a farming valley

it is an artist's delight.

Artist Note.

Another plein air painting. 

I didn't move my easel from the previous

post of the washing line...

 I just turned my head to the right.

The only thing I took artistic license 

with is the ditch. It runs straight, 

across, (parallel to the wall)

 but I felt a curve 

suited my design better.

 All to often, when I suggest a change 

to an artist's composition, 

they will whip out a

photo to show me they had copied it 

just right...

Then I find myself saying,

"it's a painting you are making, 

NOT a copy of photo."

So, my friends, 

how long did it take me to 

get that through my own head?

A loooong time.

Personally, I find I love
the long view...
where trees do not block the view.

I used an angle
brush to form my basic shapes
of color
moving into palette knife work
to add texture for an interesting
surface.

This painting was painted from a 

plein air watercolor sketch I did 

earlier this summer.

It is larger than my usual blog size

and I have an agreement with 

the wonderful people at the (above) gallery,

Mark and Gail,

that anything larger than 8"x8" goes

through them.

It has turned out to be a win-win 

situation for all as their large and beautiful
