Every year I paint the pomegranates 

when in season. 

I got a call from a friend telling me 

her poms were gorgeous 

and she invited me over to paint.

It had been quite a while since I had painted 

so this was a real treat. 

Hope you are all surviving these

powerful and awful events...

Covid, the protests, the fires and hurricanes.

Who would have every thought it 

was all possible when

wishing everyone

Artist Note.
The red and green color
combination - although a recognized
color harmony
is hard for me to handle
without
adding blue or purple.

So why paint the leaves at all?
Well, that's the way my friend
gave them to me... right off her tree
and it looked wonderful.
Just hard for me to paint!

It seems the paintings of pomegranates
 I like have no leaves... or just a few.

Julien Merrow Smith did this one
and I love it.

Artist Note

An artist friend gave me some

beautiful poms right off her tree. 

I have painted them in

three different sizes and 

this is the first one I finished.

A bright glowing red can be 

very difficult 

to paint. 

Adding white can cool it too much. 

I used 

Grumbacher Red (napathol)

Naples Yellow

Alizarin Perm. 

Thalo Blue

I used white to make a purple

from the aliz and blue. 

The greens were made with 

that wonderful 

Perylene Black and yellow. 

Transparent Brown Oxide

is always on my palette. 

I looked back at the poms 

I paint every year. 

These are the first 

I have done with them

hanging from their branch. 

I enjoyed having the leaves

to help with the design. 

I have made a little video

I apologize for not getting 

round to answering the 

comments on my previous post.

I truly appreciate them all,

but I am at the hair pulling stage

and berating myself for 

agreeing to do a solo show.

I know it is normal - 

well, for me anyway,

and, yes,  this too will pass,

but until it is all at the framers

and invitation done I 

am out of my 

comfort/ routine zone.

Watercolor Changes - day 29 in the Challenge

Artist Note.

On yesterday's post I mentioned how I had just

been given some fresh pomegranates and

would like to TRY adding one to this painting.

It is on Yupo and it's plastic surface makes it easy

to lift off a previously painted area  See below

I formed the shape I wanted with a 

damp paper towel. I also removed the sunflower

 resting at the bottom of the jar.

Next I placed the actual pom in the position

I thought would be best

Naturally... and I know you will ALL understand this...

other changes then started to happen. 

It seems pretty impossible to make a change 

without the eye noticing all the other areas

 effected by the new shape and color.

Also it is a sunny day and my set up

appeared much brighter.

One back pear disappeared.

The jar became slightly wider

A cooler blue was added - so much for 

limited palette! Other colors and shapes

changed too.

(I do enjoy a warm and cool of each primary.)

I sharpened up some edges 

and softened others.

Below is the one before the changes

I have to live with this new version for a while

to see how I feel about it.

I do know I am glad that I tried the pom addition.

Bit more energy.

I'm still pushing color!

I was given a few pomegranates

with twigs and leaves still attached.

I have been doing some experimental

stuff and I will show that tomorrow.

Mother's Pottery #8

Mother's Pottery # 8

The greens and teals in this piece are gorgeous.  Mother loved these colors and was thrilled when they became available  at the center.
This is a casserole dish which I use for many things. I adore the shape.

Yesterday's blog image did not come through and I have no idea why.

Artist Note:

Red and Green - my least favorite combination, but I think the
strong brown helps diffuse it as does having the Teal color
mixed in there as well.
I painted the branches in to give a horizontal repeat of the brown rim.
This was to also break up the strong
kerplonk of a centered, focal object.
