Late summer walks along on Canyon Road
cannot be beat. This was on a side street and
the light fixture caught my eye.

A neat couple saw this painting and liked it.

 We started to chat and I enjoyed some interesting

conversation before they returned another time

to buy it.

I really appreciate getting to 

know people through my paintings.

For a start, it has occurred  to me that we must 

share a liking for similar places
and types of beauty.

Computer fixed. What a pain when
they misbehave.

Window Study

This is the first window oil painting study done
using the watercolor painting as reference.
It has a really unfinished look to it, but
a lady saw it and liked it just the way it was.

Artist Note.
I start another 3 day workshop on Wednesday
and am looking forward to it.
One of the artists from the previous one
emailed me these images below of  a demo
I did.

The one above had a transparent
underpainting before the opaque colors
were added. Here the light/dark patterns
can be seen with some fracturing marks.

When I do a straight line I prefer to
use a credit card or knife. It prevents it
from appearing too perfect. I have added
the light on the window, the flowers started
and it looks like I had also done the window
frame. By the way - that is not MY
Chico card!

Shutters added - remembering to paint
the area in shadow a cooler blue.
and here I am using the
knife on the foliage. Sometimes I use the
flat part underneath and MUSH for softness,
but here I am adding some texture by
placing paint on with a slight downward
swish.

I thought some of you may be interested
in seeing some of the process.

This is a study for an oil painting.

I got this image from a magazine, tore it out
and have no idea who to give credit to. I added some
items and altered the colors.

Andrew Wyeth has always been a hero of mine.
No one paints windows like he does and here
are just a few of the many, many he did.
My personal favorite is not here.

wall has inspired
many an artist.

These are just a few from magazines and clip outs.
All different. With some you see the view out
of the window - others are just light shapes,
 but they all evoke a mood. A sense of place and time.

Studio Window in Santa Fe

My friend in Tesuque is a fabulous artist and this is one of her studio windows painted in the early morning. She has this enormous pot filled with glowing red geraniums. They are so bright that you almost need sunglasses on to look at them. I painted them in the shade but maybe I will try painting them in the sun later.

Her husband has done incredible things with the landscaping. It is all very natural and organic in the curves and rhythms of the different, secluded and shaded areas to read (paint) and rest in...not easy to find in the hot arid air of NM.

Santa Fe has many beautiful and interesting windows. This window box was on an old adobe at the back of Canyon Road. What appealed to me were the shadow patterns as well as the window box.

This particular adobe house had several great features and I found the front door to be wonderful too... so I painted it as well.

I am going back up to Santa Fe next week so I will be painting more plein air pieces.
