Petunia Progression

Petunia Progression

4x5in  pencil on linen card   SOLD

Here are the buds all opening up and the first large petunia
is starting to wilt. I now have four flowers and another
bud is starting to grow in-between the two
middle trumpet shapes.
It amazes me that a cutting can keep growing and
blooming  in the water...dark water now!
Petunias are beautiful and hardy flowers, but I never
appreciated their beauty until I drew them.
Now - back to oils!

    1. Thanks Celeste. I enjoyed reading your blog and seeing you put me alongside Munday regarding the fracturing. I like his work a great deal and know he is MUCH better than me.. As I said, there are a whole pile of us artists working on different ways to break up our edges.
I like what you did with the umbrella lady.

  2. Dear Julie, would you teach me to draw? This is so lovely. Where do you get linen card?

  3. Glad you like it. I wish I could draw like you though. You have such a wonderful style.
Thanks for the sweet comment regarding me on Celeste's blog.
The card was bought at an art store. It has deckle edges and is meant to paint on, but I wanted to see what the texture would do to the line.

  4. You really make me feel guilty. Seeing these beautiful sketches and knowing that the end result will be even more stunning, remind me to sketch more, but I know I don't have the time and energy for it. Damn you Julie for being so good.

    1. You are so funny, Roger. Energy it doesn't take. I will tell the truth I have had a virus or something which took all my energy away and so I hung around my bed and as I can't paint in bed... I decided to draw.
Late today I started to feel better and went to the studio and started to paint.

  7. To me a true artist is one who can draw and paint; you do both so beautifully, Julie. I wish I could do likewise. The petunias are lovely.

  9. I like the diagonal thrust to this one, Julie!
I also like the higher contrast between the values. Great drawing!

    1. Yes, more contrast, Dean, I am pleased you noticed.
With pencil it is hard to get darker areas unless you use a softer lead. But I rather like the softer tones and would use ink if I wanted hard contrast.
Love the cat and am waiting to see whats next!

  11. Really love this one, Julie. I clicked on it to get it in more detail, and can see what you mean about the texture of the paper. I shall try it sometime with the new charcoal pencils I've just bought but never used. I never knew you could get it in pencil form. 100 years ago I was using sticks of the stuff ... got in an awful mess.

I saw Celeste placed you up there with Mr Mundy! I wonder how he likes being second best? :0)

    1. Glad you like it John. Praise from you is praise indeed...even more so being such an honorable, ancient master

Sending a hug over the many miles for the wonderful, quick and humorous mind you share with us all. The bit about Mr Mundy is priceless.

    1. It went before I had finished. I have worked on the artbyte and am doing a video of the fracturing. Trouble is I keep forgetting to explain what I am doing as I go along. It is coming along though. Thanks for mentioning it.
