Dominoes Anyone?

Dominoes Anyone?

6 x 8in oil on linen  $125.

Day 15 in the 30 in 30 Days Challenge

My personal goal  for this challenge - to paint only what I have
never painted or thought of painting before.

Oh wow - we are half-way through the challenge.

This is a box of Dominoes I have. It belonged to my father.
He was an avid player and in England would join a group
to play at the pub. He taught me Threes and Fives
I attached the link to the rules and was
delighted to find a description calling it a "true English game."
As I would always rather be drawing or painting than play
games, I did not satisfy his need for intense concentration
from a partner ...so the lessons did not last for too long!
I do like having his beautiful wooden box though and
I never thought of painting it before this challenge.

  1. Wow! Just lovely! I don't know how you get such complicated compositions painted in time! We played dominoes as kids, my Granda used to take the huff when us "weans" beat him!! Made my Granny laugh at such a bad loser!

    1. I spent a bit of time setting the design up so glad you think it works. You are the Master of design so it is appreciated.
You are getting some masterpieces out of your Rowan Berry series

  3. Thank you very much. Dominoes are an excellent still life subject--since I can get no one to play with me, I might try painting them after seeing this delightful painting.

    1. Would love to see your approach to painting them. I know they would have a lot of punch.
Your video on the ocean surf was played just for the sound this morning when I was still in bed. Transported me from cold weather to a happy sunny day on the beach.

  4. Aren't memories wonderful? Mine will be how easily my six year grandson can beat me and my delight in seeing him learn to outmaneuver me. It is a lovely painting, making the eye wander through each little section of the support. And that glow......

  8. Quite honestly, your history with this box made me so happy? Why? Because I instantly felt that this was a much beloved set of dominoes that had been around a long while. Lovely painting and the heart comes through.

  9. Hi Julie, you're on a roll with the challenge! I got derailed early with a trip abroad(which I expected) and the flu (which was unexpected). I hope to get back in the 'game' today. I love the subject matter of this paintings and it inspires me to pull out our untouched game box and see what happens; like you, I'd rather paint than play games. Yet it's the wonderful memories you shared about your father that make this painting so extra special. Bravo!

  11. I love the color contrasts and your brush work on this. I keep looking at the "art bytes" to see whether your "factoring " tutorial is available. I love your work.

  13. This is an awesome painting...it has an old feel to it like your father's set probably is. The lighting in it makes me think of Norman Rockwell's painting "Law Student" for some reason. I have always loved that painting.

Have you ever heard of Chicken Feet? It's a game you play with dominoes and it's a lot of fun.
