  3. A lovely example of small. The details are impressive. Out of curiosity: Is the objective of painting often and small the ability to paint large? Where does small end and large begin? Congrats on being included. Marine is an impressive painter of small.

    1. I find it much easier to paint large than small. I mean anything up to 36x40 but then they get tough if you go larger. I am working on a commission 40" H and almost 72" W and it requires a lot of planning. The hard part of a small one is making it look like it is a larger painting. That also takes planning. The daily painting is the best way I know to get really familiar with your paint and brush marks.
Do you remember when you were doing your charts and how the act of doing them regularly helped you feel a confidence afterwards that was knowledge based? Thats what the daily painting does for me. It also feeds my art soul. I work on other sizes when inspiration hits.
I am intrigued by your Venetian technique. Your other work has been free, loose and alla prima. You have great skill in all versions.

    2. I was just reading Philip Steadman's account on painting methods in the sixteenth century, the century of the fabulous European Painters like Vermeer, his painter of interest. Not only did they employ the Venetian Technique of doing a complete monochrome before the color layer, but they didn't paint all over the surface as we Moderns do; they painted in SMALL sections, one at a time. Todd had said this in the first session and I thought of Carol Marine's work, 6"x6". They also used the Camera obscura. It's an interesting web site. Philip Steadman's.com. So I started another painting on my own in the Venetian style, smaller than the 24 by 36 I'm doing for the class. It's 9 x 12--next 6 x 6, which should be about the size of the areas that the Venetian Masters worked at a sitting--then there's the artists who do miniatures, smaller than small paintings. As for how long it takes to do these things? That's a different topic. The master artists worked in guilds with lots of apprentices. A different world for artists then, better I think.

  12. Julie, I look forward to getting Carol's book. So glad to see your art featured in it! I absolutely LOVE your Zinnias and Marigolds. They were two of my Mom's favorite flowers to grow (right behind irises) and they always remind me of her. I never have gotten the knack of painting flowers that look real and admire you for your lovely renditions. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!

    1. My mother had favorite flowers and like you, I think of her when I see them.
But Lana, your way with flowers is so free and contemporary. I would love to be able to do that. Truly I would. Your prints are very appealing to me. I am from an older generation raised with a pretty classical background so it comes through in my work. I LOVE the freedom of us all having different painting styles. Just like speech.

    1. Not as talented as you, dear Kaethe. Hearing you are quitting your job to paint full time is fab news. If you are as good as you are now, then who knows what lies ahead. I know I am going to follow your progress with delight.
