Purple Cabbage Study
Purple Cabbage Study
6x6in oil on canvas board $100. SOLD
Remember the fellow member of the guild who brought me
the yellow cauliflower? This time she came with a cabbage.
An unusual one. Deep purple center and green outer leaves.
Her farmers market is obviously super special.
Artist note.
When my husband saw this he asked what it was! Oh boy!
I thought I had better show the photo.
I pushed some bits of color into this purely for the pleasure
of livening up that green. I used a knife and enjoyed the
push and pull of the paint.
Here is the cabbage. Seeing is believing!

ReplyDeleteWanting cole slaw... I love greens and purples together. Throw in blues and you have my favorite palette! Absolutely beautiful painting, Julie. I'm always amazed when I see a beautiful food painting. You sure know how to paint them right!
ReplyDeleteFabulous! I love how you played in the paint and just had fun with it. It shows...masterful use of other colors that sing...what a fun painting!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous painting Julie, full of great texture and deep rich color, I knew what it was immediately!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you take everyday items, unusual or not, see the beauty in them and then paint them as portraits. This cabbage will win a beauty contest for sure.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully intriguing color! I knew what it was immediately. I love how you beat it up and made it so much more interesting. Clever gal.
ReplyDeleteThe cabbages have drama! These varieties give satisfaction before to the eye ... and then to the taste buds!
ReplyDeleteYour cabbage is wonderful! I'm feel them as seeing and touching!
Your husband must not eat cabbage. I knew what it was right away and it's lovely. Such a pretty purple!
ReplyDeleteI emailed you in response to your comment...if you didn't get it, you might want to check your spam box.
I'm in the I love purple and green camp. And what a great job painting a cabbage! Not an easy one to do. Your dark pattern just dances around the painting....and the colors "play".Nice........
ReplyDeleteJulie - I knew right away what it was...lovely colors and it makes me want to go out and pick cabbage from the garden and do a painting too. Thanks for taking an ordinary subject and making it so beautiful and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a farmer's marketer so I'm real familiar with purple cabbage, but they don't usually have green leaves too. This is way beautiful. Love purple and green together.
ReplyDeleteAnother great one, Julie! Love the blade blends (another made up term by yours truly)!
ReplyDeleteThe bits of surprise blues and reds really excite this painting!!!!!
love your purple cabbage!
ReplyDelete"...of Cabbages and Kings!" It looks like you have spent as much time around gardening as I have. Great result a cabbage with attitude, brilliant! Love it!
ReplyDeleteIf you didn't show us the picture I wouldn't have believed how purple this cabbage was...and a beautiful shade!! Love this piece and perfect splashes of blues reds and greens...!!!!
ReplyDeleteI really admire how you portrayed this, when I look at the photo, I see a hint of those lovely colors you splashed around, but you really brought this subject to life and gave it personality the way you did that!
ReplyDeleteYou have made an ordinary cabbage look absolutely wonderful!!! Beautiful Julie!
ReplyDeleteI love it Julie! Purple and green....one of my favorite combinations. Nice knife work too.
ReplyDeleteYour painting is only about a billion times more beautiful than the real vegetable! You have found its spirit!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous violets and shapes! Hard to work this round shape into a fascinating square, but of course your did it wonderfully!
ReplyDeleteI love those extra pops of color in the greens. Beautiful painting. I was at the farmers market the other day and one of the vendors had a cheddar cheese cauliflower...orange just like the cheese!
ReplyDeleteWho knew that a cabbage could outshine a flower, at least when it comes to colour and texture. A wonderful, spontaneous painting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit to my blog. I often use strange words like crikey - it comes from being English and old! *wink*
Wonderful! :D Love how masterfully you've made it at once abstract and yet as recognizable as the photo. Love also the reflected sky and the "ribs" of the leaves.
ReplyDeleteLove the colors and highlights Julie - very pretty, huh who knew a cabbage could be so pretty.
ReplyDeleteLove the cabbage. Love to see the photo too..Beautiful
ReplyDeleteGorgeous mix of purple and green--love how you did this.
