Taos Stream

Taos Stream

6x8in oil on canvas board  $125.

This was painted from a photo and memory.
The shower has just passed over and the air was clean and oh... so fresh.

Artist Note.

When I paint from one of my photos, I close my eyes and try to go
back to what I was feeling when I took it.
This is a lovely little stream just on the outskirts of Taos, N.M.
I remembered the sounds of the water and smell of the wet earth .
There was a breeze and a tractor starting back up after the rain.
It was the red of the wild flowers which attracted me.
They were fenced off so I never knew what they were,
but they sure looked like poppies.

  1. Hello,Julie!Painting from photos also for me is a moment of imagination.
Beyond te picture find something that vibrates the mind (and heart )of the painter and in the mind (and heart)of viewer .... And this morning I can FEEL what you wrote looking at your wonderful landscape!

    1. Your roses are fabulous, Rita. You paint from life too, but glad you agree on recalling the moment and reason for taking the photo to bring back the moment.

  2. So glad you included the description of what you remembered about that stream. My personality is split between being verbal and visual so I like having the picture and the words. It looks like a lovely spot and I do like that paint application too.

    1. Thanks Libby. I am pleased you mentioned your split personality. I consider myself visual, but then realized, I too, like to read what the artist says, so I must be a "splitter" too.

  9. Oh Julie, I have really enjoyed the landscape series you've been working on. It's great to see your fabulous technique applied to another genre. I would love to "see" as you do! To be able to look WITHIN the reflection, shadow or shape and apply the right values/colors to each is just amazing. What a gift!
