First Onion Painting

First Onion Painting

14x11in  oil on canvas panel

I thought it would be interesting for you to see the first onion
painting I did for the Fruit and Vegetable show, but never entered.
Compared to yesterday's image it looks very ordinary.
The question is...if I had entered this one
would I have won the Peoples Choice Award?

Artist Note.

I appreciate everyone who sent an email asking about the shaper
I showed. I am replying to all of you as fast as I can.

  6. I like the second much more. And I think its a compositional/values thing. The mouth on the jar is the first thing my eyes go to, then the onions. That is not to say this is in any way a bad painting. It just means that if its onions you're after, the one you entered says that better. In any case I like them both, but for different reasons.

    1. Good comment Louise - you are correct and I agree. What you do not know is this was originally a demo I did with apples instead of onions and it was all about how to paint the light hitting the jug.
When I needed a painting of onions, I thought how easy it would be to make those apples into onions and I bought some kale to cover the other apples. I enjoyed it but knew I had to do something just with onions for the show.
Now you know the rest of the story!

    1. Thanks Jane. You may be interested to know the jug is from Italy. I love it and have painted it a lot.

  8. Beautiful painting but I agree. The painting is about the jug first. Area of hightest contrast trumps in this painting. And congrats on the award. It is all fun, isn't it?

    1. Hi Helen, if you go up the list to read my reply to Louise you can read the story about the jug!
Thanks and I agree...it is all fun, except when I am struggling like crazy to capture what I cannot.
