Open Door
9x12in oil on canvas
unfinished!
Artist Note.
This is a larger size than the others in this Challenge
and when I started out I had a dog
included...
- took him out -
- put him in -
- took him out again -
And I still want to see if I can put him in there,
This chair belongs to good friends and I feel
their much loved dog
should be included
Because of the pressure of the daily challenge
I needed to post before completing it.
This is painted on black gesso canvas.
You can see where it is not covered.
Tomorrow I start of a new theme - flowers!

Your poetic words explain how I feel about open doors.
DeleteThey seem to be a constant theme through the years. And, yes - the dog with an open door too. Usually at the door, waiting.
I want to thank you for your continued comments. I enjoy them so much.
I feel the word "stately". The chair says it all.
ReplyDeleteStately? It is a graceful chair, isn't it.
DeleteStill like your rolling hills.
I love the open door and hints of pink throughout, it is beautiful to see the way a simple chair and room has a story. This is beautifully composed, it is true how pets seem to be drawn to chairs. Reminds me of my cat and a dark chair he loved and destroyed with his claws,I wish I had snapped a picture of him on it! Thanks Julie, for providing inspiration.
ReplyDeleteHi Celia, I like the story you shared about your cat. I understand you.
DeleteWe gave our god-daughter two wonderful chairs when she went to university - only to see her cat tear them down to the spring and wood frame. Cutest cat you ever saw, too!
I have to tell you that your peppers watercolor is really and truly gorgeous!
Your p
I like the 'unfinished' look... But a dog would be a lovely addition! You are doing so well in this challenge! :0)
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandra. Thanks also for saying I am doing well in the challenge.
DeleteI think we all are!
It was so generous of you to give such a lovely painting away.
so so warm and inviting!
ReplyDeletethanks Sue - love your abstract. It sure has the wow factor.
DeleteI have always loved your blue doors and now it's clear that I love your chairs and lamps too! This is beautiful even if it is not finished. I hope the pressures of the challenge are good pressures and not bad ones.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing the dog and your flowers. Your paintings always give me a sense of peace.
Sending you love today.
You make me happy, dear Lisa. Thanks for the comment and love.
DeleteYour posts have been fascinating and your chairs inspired my run of chairs. Looking forward to seeing how the trio turns out
I was glad to read this was not your chair. I was beginning to think you were really an eclectic when it came to chairs in your house. The black lends a nice subdued effect. A little whitish, brownish fluffy purse dog might be just the right touch--not a Great Dane.
ReplyDeleteOn a more serious note, I hope you haven't been touched by the storms I've been reading about in your vicinity. The weather this year has been causing lots of people lots of grief.
LOL - nope, only one of the chairs was mine.
DeleteIt was a brown standard poodle which melted into the floor and rug. Just could not get it right. Standing, silhouetted at the door was how I was aiming after the resting position did not work.
Yes - steady rain and we are all so grateful due to the drought. Our town has not experienced flooding like other cities have. Thanks for caring.
Your Venetian School course is off to a grand start... fascinating stuff . You explain it all so well.
I have confidence the doggie will make his appearance, comfortably at home in this beautiful interior, Julie!
ReplyDeleteDon't ya just love working on top of black gesso! I used it a lot!
I am glad you like the black gesso . I have some concern about the longevity regarding how white and other colors cam go transparent as time goes on.
DeleteHow kind hearted you are, Dean. That is a beautiful dog portrait in memoriam.
Dear Julie - I am sure you will get the dog in there somewhere. Love the open door affect. Such beautiful colors. Will be looking forward to your flowers.
ReplyDeleteThanks Debbie - I am hoping the flowers will be easier. I have no idea why I dont just plonk a single item down and have at it.
DeleteCongratulations for being selected in the Blog Around the World. I enjoyed your selections.
It's lovely, Julie. The addition of a dog (maybe in another painting?) could be good. This piece says the chair is important. I like it very much.
ReplyDeleteA sleeping dog addition, perhaps by that sunny spot near the door, could be the focal point if the chair was moved out of the center of the painting, and more in shadow. This is what I would try if I was doing the painting. Since it's your piece you likely have your own ideas!
I enjoyed reading your suggestions. Thank you for taking the time to do that. The owners have a large brown, standard poodle. A really wonderful dog . The only way to get it to work is just as you suggest, in the sunny spot. I tried it up there at first ,but it didn't work so I moved it around - all on a piece of glass of course. Time was of an essence so had to let go but am mulling it around.
DeleteI like your two redo's The cloud one is especially powerful.
The light entering the room really makes the chair a star. How about a second painting with the puppy? (No pressure).
ReplyDeleteI think you are right. it will be a painting all on its own.
DeleteHey Blanche - when are you going to do another painting. I miss your blog.
A great series of chairs one more beautiful than the other ! I love this one with the door open to the gorgeous flower garden .
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane - it is a flower garden, yes - and your beautiful bouquet is full of gorgeous flowers.
DeleteHow wonderful this piece is, Julie! Dog or not, finished or not--I like seeing how thoughtful you are about your process, and I am sure whatever you do or don't do to it, it will be/is a memorable piece...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely comment. I do appreciate your words, Meredith,
DeleteI admire you blogged a shared frustration over why one painting flows easier and others do not. I read it right after a struggle and felt better.
