Roses in Ancient Glass

Roses in Ancient Glass

6x6in  oil on canvas board   SOLD

This is another beautiful, ancient piece from my collection of Roman glass.

Artist Note:

I wanted to try to paint a similar set up as in yesterday's blog, but try using a more painterly technique. I want to paint it with a knife tomorrow.
I still had the light directly overhead but these are silk roses so I didn't have to worry about them wilting from the heat. I did not use an under-painting this time but went for Transparent Brown adding some Ultramarine Blue where I wanted it really dark. I always try to use a transparent color for my dark areas because they seem to glow more. I painted the vessel over the background color and lifted off the roses and cloth area with a damp brush before painting them. The fringe was painted last.

  2. I love the color scheme of your glass paintings. The "many tints and shades" of white. The darks do seem to glow!
